The Farm Our farm is located in Hagerstown, Maryland and we delight in our British Soay sheep. British Soay sheep are a threatened breed of sheep and are believed to be the oldest surviving domesticated sheep from pre-historic times. Soay are a small breed - about the size of a large German Shepard. Their coloring spans the genetic spectrum from blond to black and all shades between - some with distinctive white markings! Mature Soay rams have the curling horns commonly associated with Dodge ram trucks and mountain sheep. Ewes may have wide sweeping horns, shorter arched wings, stubby little horns or no horns at all. Soay lambs are precocious. Soay sheep are wonderful for grooming estates, clearing farms, and maintaining pastures with jutting rocks, trees, steep hillsides and other areas that horses and cattle cannot - or will not - graze. They love brambles and berry bushes that can become a tangled maze without intervention of some kind. All of our sheep are registered with the Rare Breed Survival Trust (RBST) in Great Britain and are enrolled in the U.S. Voluntary Scrapie Program. We belong to the Soay Sheep Society, are members of the RBST and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. We offer breeding stock, as well as Soay wool for sale. Please feel free to contact us for additional information. |

Southern Oregon Soays Over the course of three years, 1998, 1999 and 2000 Kathie and Val imported the only known flock of documented Soay sheep outside of Europe from Montreal, Canada. Kathie's web site is the best on line resource for information on Soay sheep - and she and Val are the largest breeders of RBST Registered Soay in the country. And they are incredible women to work with! |
