Soay Wool for Hand Spinning

Soays’ fleece varies from light to dark brown, and they naturally shed the wool in the summer. The remarkably fine fleece can be variable. While the double coat contains finer and coarser fibers, the two types can be hard to differentiate. Annual production per animal averages 3-5 pounds of wool (1.25 – 2.25 kg), with a staple length of 2-6 inches (5-15 cm) and a count of 44s-50s (36-29 microns).

Hand spinning is an art mastered by determination and patience. Spinning is achieved by twisting fiber into a continuous thread by hand or by using a spinning wheel. Then you take the thread and spin it into thick or thin, plyed or unplyed, dyed or left natural "yarns" for for knitting, and weaving projects. You can also use unspun fiber for knitting, weaving and felting. There are many excellent web sites offering in depth information and supplies for this art.

A very special thank you to Margaret Russell for
permission and the images of her beautiful
woven table runner produced from Soay wool!

We currently have a waiting list for our wool. If you would like to be added to it please e-mail us.
